Buroplex BSB or how to live in Brasilia. Or at least to die trying...

We face everyday a challenge: how to live in this strange place called Brasilia. This is not a city, but a giant campus for a human species, the bureaucrats.

It´s also a isolated Boomtown of the Brazilian boom, and the name of Boomtown.gov.br would be appropriate for this blog if only the URL was not restricted...

Can be called in many other ways, one of the bloggers in our team call Brasilia " the place of unhappy people". But that may be extreme.

There are hundreds of pages written in prose, verse and film about the experience of living in Brazil. Of course none has helped to change one inch the foreign stereotypes. Brazil is still a place where people dance with bananas in their heads (this is the best case scenario, some may be surprised that they don´t use sombreros).

But the experience of living in Bra-silia (no, it´s not the capital of the lingerie industry) has not been very much bloggers material. It´s as un-Brazilian as the sombreros. No beaches, no dancing in the street, not even drug traffickers.

BuroplexBSB will try to keep a record of our own daily awe of the experience of living in the Metroplex of the Brazilian bureaucracy, a city that was built the way Jorge Luis Borges wanted to build a world through human rationality. Such a giant enterprise is doomed to failure and at the same time merits all our admiration. And perhaps some day, our love.

  1. i want to say that they not only don't use sombreros but they usually don't use any kind of hats even though it's really sunny out

  2. Brasilia is a city which was conceived for gods: it has great dimensions and the human presence in open places is almost insignificant.

In other words: some burocrats' superiority complex just gets worse there.

  3. And i want to say that the beautocrats of Brasilia most certainly need to start wearing hats - actually that should be helmets - becasue what the gps does NOT show are the diving birds - just ourside of the radar field - that suddenly attach the vulnerable scalps - especially on the heads of those adventure seeking bureacrats who - undterred by the lack of sidewalks - brave the tundra au pied. They soon learn to avoid all city trekking and buy themselves a jet ski. And even Lula - whose home sits amidst the Brasilizn tundra - has learned to cover his head - he was recently seen on a Brazilian beach under the protecion of a cooler he carried on his shoulder. Only his fellow Brasilians really understood that this cooler was not a symbol of Lula's strong ties to the common man - going to the beach carrying his beer - but rather revealed the habits of the Brasilians - the bigger your head - the bigger cover you need to carry.
